~ May 2023 ~

Saturday 13 May saw the start of this years Duke of Edinburgh expeditions at Nottingham Free School. Thirty-nine Bronze participants, as well as two of our Silver Direct entrants, set out to Beaumanor Hall in Loughborough for their training.

It was fantastic to see our Bronze cohort take to the countryside and represent the school in such a positive way. Karos Adventure staff, as well as members of the public, were impressed with the behaviour displayed by our students. For the majority, this was the first time camping without parents, and certainly the first time walking long distances with a heavy load. Despite this challenge, our students fared exceptionally well, and have all been signed off for progression to the qualifying stage in June. NFS is proud to recognise this achievement.

Naturally, there were some funny moments. The stand out of which being when students returned from their first day of walking to find that their food supplies had been set upon by a rogue squirrel. The stolen goods amounted to two porridge pots, two sandwiches, some corn snacks, and an entire jam roly-poly. Fortunately, Mrs. Gray was able to stop off en-route in order to replace the missing items. The lesson for next time: do not leave your food in the front compartment of the tent!

Squirrels aside, a big congratulations to NFS students for their achievement.

As always, I would like to say a huge thank you to parents/carers for dropping off and picking up, and a monumental thank you to all NFS staff who selflessly gave up their time in order to volunteer. Without this, it would not be possible to facilitate this experience for our students.

CHATGPT (a form of AI)- a parent guide

Chat GPT is hosted online, it is available as both a desktop application and can be accessed on a web browser.  There is no set minimum age restriction for using Chat GPT but it requires you to sign in with an email address and to accept the site terms and conditions before you begin using it.

On Chat GPT, you can type in a question or topic that you would llike to learn more about.  For example, you could ask 'What is the tallest mountain in the world?'.  You can have multiple ongoing conversations which you can revisit and ChatGPT uses information you have given it in the chat to tailor each answer it gives.

As parents, it is important that you are aware of the risks of using AI.  A parent guide on AI is available here.

OMEGLE - a parent guide

Omegle is a website which is specifically designed to allow users to talk to strangers.  It works by randomly matching users to talk one-to-one using either text or video.  It is free and anonymous to use, with no account registration or age verification.

Most recently, Omegle has been talked about and highlighted through the video sharing app, TikTok.  A large proportion of our school community use TikTok.  To further support parents on this website, a parent guide on Omegle is available here.

Students in Design and Technology have been working incredibly hard over the last term.

Year 8 students have been casting pewter with Miss Cockayne, designing, and cutting their own mould, then finishing their pewter. The results have been fantastic, and we cannot wait to see the ones which are in progress now, to be finished after half term.

Year 10 having been busy learning about different wood joints and how to work with timbers. We are really pleased with the results where lap and finger joints have been used. Year 10 Design and Technology students should be very proud of themselves.

Year 7 students have been learning how to solder safely and have soldered their own circuit. Students have then learnt how to assemble the acrylic parts to make a LED light. The determination shown to make their circuit work has been amazing. Well done all.

Any students who are yet to collect their apron made in the first unit can pop and see Miss Cockayne to collect.

Rounders City Final - Year 9

A huge well done to the Year 9 girls’ Rounders team, who progressed to the City Finals after winning all 4 of their Heat games. They beat Nottingham University Samworth Academy 5 ½ - 3 ½, Fernwood 6 ½ to 2 and Bulwell 3 ½ to 2 ½. The girls didn’t match their Heat performance and as such, finished 4th in the City. With some commitment to training, I have no doubt that next year they could be medal winners.

The Year 10 GCSE Art students were kindly invited to attend a private viewing of the Graphics and Illustration degree shows at Nottingham Contemporary, followed by a visit of the Photography degree show at the Bonington gallery. The students saw a variety of work in different mediums,  they gained inspiration for their own GCSE work but also were able to see what a degree path might look like in the art sector.

Our next Art trip will be the second week back after half term, where our Year 9 students will head to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which we are looking forward to!

Mrs Wilken - Head of Art

During the two weeks commencing 26th June, year 10 will be sitting their end of year 10 exams.

Students will sit exams in all their examined subjects over these two weeks, and these will help inform plans for next year, as well as groupings and potential tier entry.

These exams will be sat in the school hall, under full exam conditions, with all access arrangements being put in place for those students who require them. We would like students to become comfortable within this environment and believe that giving them this opportunity early, and twice again in year 11, will help prepare them for the final GCSE exams at the end of year 11.

I will be sending out the exam timetable, and important information, prior to half term.

If you feel your child may be eligible for access arrangements not yet in place please contact our Deputy SENCO, Mrs N Bee to discuss on nbee@nottinghamfreeschool.co.uk

Mrs Farnie - Deputy Headteacher

We are saddened to announce that we will be saying farewell to a member of our SEN Hub Team.

Miss Scothern will be leaving us the end of this half term to join the SEND team at Nottingham City Council.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all the hard work that she has undertaken with our students at Nottingham Free School and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours.
